We study environmental drivers of disease with a focus on the ecology and evolution of pathogens encountering novel hosts. Our work draws from diverse fields including ecology, evolution, molecular biology, and conservation and will inform efforts to prevent future pandemics. We use a model system -- Caenorhabditis nematodes and their native viruses to answer questions about the drivers of pathogen spillover.
